Thinking beyond the brief: combining sludge dewatering and water savings

At a Belgian Food industry site, OQEMA optimised biological sludge dewatering through close collaboration and direct, undiluted dosing with Q-FLOQ WX 532. This approach increased sludge dry matter from 15% to 20%, reduced sludge volumes by 25% and saved approximately 2 million litres of tap water per year, delivering clear operational and sustainability gains.

When one challenge becomes two

When Roel, Sales Manager at OQEMA, first engaged with the site, the brief was clear. Improve the dry matter content of biological sludge after centrifugation. As discussions progressed, it became clear that the customer was also under pressure to reduce clean water consumption on site.

These objectives are often addressed separately. Improving sludge dewatering typically relies on diluted polymer solutions, making water reduction a parallel project rather than part of the same solution. By staying close to the customer and involving OQEMA’s Water Treatment experts early, the focus shifted towards combining both goals.

A different way to approach sludge dewatering

By staying close to the customer and looking beyond the initial brief, OQEMA was able to combine technical expertise with a practical, on-site approach. Rather than treating sludge dewatering and water reduction as separate challenges, the team focused on delivering a solution that addressed both. The result was a simpler, more responsive process that improved performance, reduced resource use and strengthened the partnership between OQEMA and the customer.
